Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is an assault on the visual senses.  It takes the action film genre to a new level.  I am not sure if this is good.  Towards the end of the approximate 2 hour and 20 minute movie, I was getting anxious for it to end as I was getting fatigued by all the action.

Obviously, Transformers is a movie to see for the special effects.  They are impressive and spectacular.  The sinking of a Nimitz class aircraft carrier was amazing.  It made no sense, but was very well done.  The image of a sailor drowning at the end was a good touch to remind viewers that mass destruction does cost lives.  There was a scene of soldiers’ coffins coming back from a battle with the Decepticons so the movie was good in bringing home the message that violence does cost lives.

The plot was rambling and had many holes.  It is a film where the story is built around the special effects and not the other way.  The general story is that the main character, Sam Witwicky, is going off to college, but is dragged back into the intergalactic struggle between the Autobots and Decepticons.  After that there is a search for some devices hidden on Earth that got very convoluted and I didn’t really understand.  The movie is a rollercoaster and you just have to hold on.

The most notable plot gaffs were:

  • The Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in Washington DC has an aircraft bone yard behind it.
  • Sam’s girlfriend is running and falling down in the desert, but her pants remain pristine white.
  • What about the stone that Sam’s girl friend had?  The Decepticons were so anxious to find it, but half way through the movie it isn’t mentioned again.

Transformers’ Revenge of the Fallen is a good summer mega action film.  While I question why I went to see it (some deep Hollywood action film affliction), it was worth the $6 for the matinee showing.

    Ian,

Good feeling to know that someone else saw those gaffs.
I have a feeling that the person in charge of continuity on a Micahel Bay film has the worst job in Hollywood.
“Uh, Michael, when the Transformer busts out of the Air and Space Museum in Washington DC, they’re in the Desert.”
    “So????” says Bay.
“Uh, DC doesn;t have a desert, Michael.”
    “So???”
