Wave at Danfords Hotel & Marina

Ela & I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary by going to the Wave at Danfords Hotel & Marina in Port Jefferson, NY.  We enjoyed the dinner very much and had a memorable evening together.  It was a Thursday and there were only 3 other tables occupied in the restaurant.  We assume that was because of the day of the week and economy.  The bar was crowded with an upscale crowd that appeared mixed in age. The noise from the bar carried into the dinning room, but was at tolerable level and didn’t make us feel so alone.

Our table was by the back window where we could see the water and ferry.  The view was great as we got to watch a ferry come in and depart. Also, we could see people walking in from their boats that were tied up in the marina in back of the restaurant.

For an appetizer we had the calamari and oysters on the half shell.  The calamari has lightly breaded and cooked to perfection.  It came with a chipotle and marinara sauces. The chipotle was terrific with the calamari.  The marinara sauce was good too, but I personally a not a fan of tomato based sauces.  The oysters were excellent, but too big for my taste.  Ela thought they were fine. Only six oysters came on the plate, but were reasonable for the price.

We had a bottle of Spanish red wine that was very good, but can’t remember the name of it.

Ela had the “surf and turf” and I had the shell steak as entries.  Ela’s filet of mignon and lobster tail can with mashed potatoes and asparagus.  Her asparagus was a little over cooked or over warmed up, but not enough to complain about. I didn’t bother to ordering any side dishes with the steak as we had two appetizers.  Both of our meats were cooked to our specifications and were excellent.  My steak did come with three choices of sauces and I went with the Béarnaise.  It was OK, as my father has made better.

For desert, Ela and I shared a Crème Brûlée.  I was probably one of the best Crème Brûlées that I have ever had.  It had hints of banana and vanilla.  Ela had a tea with desert and I had coffee.  I was surprised that at this caliber type of restaurant they served Lipton tea.  The coffee was perfect for my taste.

The service was very good and had nice chat with the waitress at the end of dinner. She made sure our needs were satisfied, but didn’t pester us as the chain restaurants tend to do.

Overall the ambiance and food was great.  We would recommend the Wave and plan to go again at the next opportunity.  While the cost was inline with what I would expect for that scale of restaurant, but it is not something we can afford except for special occasions.
