The Wrecker by Clive Cussler and Justin Scott is an enjoyable action thriller. This is the second novel to feature Issac Bell. The first was The Chase. These novels differ from Cussler’s usual formula as the preface starts in the future from the main story line.
The Wrecker is set in 1907. Osgood Hennessy, president of the Southern Pacific Railroad, is about to complete his ambitious plans of a railroad empire stretching from California to New York, but someone is sabotaging the construction. Hennessy calls in the famed Van Dorn Detective agency to investigate and their lead detective, Issac Bell is put on the case.
Bell quickly determines that he is battling a cunning and ruthless opponent who plans every last detail. The story takes the reader from coast to coast on steam engines with Bell tracking the Wrecker and trying to figure out what his true motives are for his heinous acts.
I recommend The Wrecker to all who like mindless action novels. Even though this novel is set in turn of the century America, the characters and action kept me enthralled.
