I would be remiss if I didn’t write about Cafe Riviera in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. It is a great Polish pastry shop on Manhattan Ave. Ela and I make it a point to stop there whenever we are in Greenpoint. The ambiance is great and has a European flair to it. There are 8 to 10 small tables against the wall where you can sit to have a coffee and pastry. My favorite is the one right by the front window where I can watch people on Manhattan Ave. I usually end up waiting for Ela there while she is off shopping. The coffee is very good. I usually take my coffee black without sugar, but they add steamed milk to their regular coffee. Add a little brown sugar and you got a great concoction. I guess you can get the same at Starbucks, but certainly not for a dollar. Also, don’t like the coffee at Starbucks as it is too strong The pastries are delectable. I don’t think we have had a bad one yet. It looks like you can pre-order cakes and other items as we saw people collecting specialty cakes. The line to order can be long, but [...]

Ela and I went to Christina’s in Greenpoint, Brooklyn last night. We haven’t been to Christina’s in over a year while we go to Greenpoint about every month or so to stock up on Polish supplies. Christina’s used to be our regular place to eat for many years, but the last couple of times we went the food hasn’t been very good. We found that the quality of the food went down after the establishment was remodeled from being a diner to a restaurant. After giving the remodeled Christina’s a couple of tries, Ela and I started to go to other restaurants in the Greenpoint area instead. There are two other Polish restaurants, Lomzynianka and Krolewskie Jadlo, that are good further down Manhattan Ave. At Krolewskie Jadlo, it looked like all the old Christina’s waitresses went to work there after the remodeling. We decided to give Christina’s another chance since we hadn’t been there is a while and parked right near by. We were quite pleasantly surprised that the food was much better than the last time we were there. Ela and I had breaded pork cutlet that were very big and cooked just right – not too dry. Ela had [...]

Ela & I went for the first time yesterday to Yin Yang Grand Buffet in Stony Brook. I haven’t been to a Chinese buffet style restaurant since we moved to Long Island – over 5 years. This restaurant was much better than I remember previous similar styled buffets in Westchester. Typically Chinese buffets put more emphasis on quantity over quality. Yin Yang was no different, but the quality was higher on the value proposition ratio. A big benefit was that it had a sushi bar. The sushi was not the greatest, but it was satisfactory. Sushi and steak are the only two foods that I find myself sometimes craving. My favorite dish was a hot & sour calamari. I had two helpings of it. The breaded shrimp was very good too. All the dishes that I tried were good and I had quite a few. The ambience left much to be desired. It was similar to store front Chinese take out, but was OK for the value. The waitresses came and cleared our plates regularly so the table didn’t get cluttered and we looked like the pigs that we are. Dinner per person on Friday to Sunday is $15.95 per [...]

Ela and I go food shopping regularly at the Polish Delis in Copiague, NY. The high point of each trip is having a meal at Alicja’s Restaurant. Their tagline is “Providing the Best Polish Cuisine on the Island” which I would agree. There are some good Polish restaurants in GreenPoint, but for the proximity and price, Alicja’s is very, very good. There are only about 16 regular items on the menu ranging in from $6.50 to $12.00 (Polish Platter). We have had most of them and haven’t found a bad choice yet. My usual choice is a breaded pork cutlet that comes with mashed potatoes. I think almost all the entrees come with mashed potatoes. Each entrée includes the salad bar which has Polish salads – carrot, beet, cucumber, cabbage, etc. salad. The soups are excellent and we usually have one as an appetizer even though they are basically meals in themselves. Of course, no meal would be complete without some Zywiec or another Polish beer. I can’t have more than one as I believe they are stronger than typical American beers. The atmosphere is simple, but tastefully decorated. It has the ambiance of a diner. There is a bar, [...]

Ela & I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary by going to the Wave at Danfords Hotel & Marina in Port Jefferson, NY. We enjoyed the dinner very much and had a memorable evening together. It was a Thursday and there were only 3 other tables occupied in the restaurant. We assume that was because of the day of the week and economy. The bar was crowded with an upscale crowd that appeared mixed in age. The noise from the bar carried into the dinning room, but was at tolerable level and didn’t make us feel so alone. Our table was by the back window where we could see the water and ferry. The view was great as we got to watch a ferry come in and depart. Also, we could see people walking in from their boats that were tied up in the marina in back of the restaurant. For an appetizer we had the calamari and oysters on the half shell. The calamari has lightly breaded and cooked to perfection. It came with a chipotle and marinara sauces. The chipotle was terrific with the calamari. The marinara sauce was good too, but I personally a not a fan of tomato based sauces. The oysters [...]
