The First Law by John Lescroart was a very good thriller. It features San Francisco defense attorney Dismas Hardy and police lieutenant Abe Glitsky who are the primary characters in all the John Lescroart novels I have read so far. This novel was slightly different as there was no primary legal proceeding that the plot was centered on. The plot revolves around the San Francisco Patrols Specials, a private police force for paying customers. The story begins when Sam Silverman, an elderly pawnshop owner and friend of Abe Glitsky’s father, is murdered during a robbery. Glitsky has been promoted from heading the San Francisco homicide division to payroll. Even though he knows he will be stepping on the toes of the new homicide division chief, Glitsky starts asking questions about the murder. Glitsky investigation soon leads him to believe that the primary suspect, Hardy’s client, is not the real killer. The First Law was very hard to put down. I recommend it to anyone who likes police and legal thrillers. While I didn’t purposely mean to read it next, The First Law is the prequel to The Motive, the last John Lescroart novel that I read.

The Motive by John Lescroart was a very good legal thriller. It was a New York Times Bestseller. The basic plot is that Dismas Hardy’s first girl friend is being tried for the murder of her father-in-law and girl friend. It is up to Dismas and his good friend, Abe Glitsky, to prove that she didn’t commit the crime. The plot twist was obvious and slow in materializing, but do recommend to those who like legal novels.

“The Hearing” by John Lescroat is a good legal thriller on par with his other novels. The center characters are Dismas Hardy, a defense attorney, and Abe Glitsky, a homicide lieutenant, who are close friends in San Francisco. The plot revolves around a heroin addict, Cole Burgess, who is found holding the gun and caught running a way from a murdered female lawyer, Elaine Wager. Elaine is Abe Glitsky’s daughter who he has never acknowledged. Glitsky forces a confession from the Burgess while he is experiencing withdraw. After Burgess is treated for his addiction he recants his confession and starts to proclaim his innocence. Hardy is retained as Burgess’ lawyer as his mother is the wife of another friend. Initially Hardy has little doubt of Burgess’ guilt, but doesn’t believe Burgess should get the death penalty. The District Attorney, who is coming up for reelection and has been considered soft on crime, has made the case political. As Hardy and Glitsky investigate the crime they soon come to the conclusion that the homicide not just a simple mugging and maybe Burgess is not guilty of the murder after all. I like John Lescroat’s novels as I have read a couple now. They [...]

I finished John Lescroart’s “The Second Chair” last night. I am not sure if I have read anything by Mr. Lescroart before, but will certainly put him on my ‘to read’ list. The Second Chair is about a young associate, Amy Wu, in a law firm who finds her self involved in a major murder case that she is ill prepared to handle. Amy is battling the loss of her father and tries to take the easy way in pleading out her 17 year old client. Her client though instead of pleading guilty in court confesses his innocence for the double homicide that he is charged. This leads her boss, the law firm’s managing partner, to become the second chair in the defense of their young defendant and slowly they both come to the realization that their client might not be guilty. The book was slow to start and it wasn’t until half way through that I became in grossed. The beginning of the novel was confusing as characters were thrown in without adequate introduction. As the story progressed the characters became clearer and the story was much easier to follow. I have a number of John Lescroart novels on [...]
