I have wanted to see the Wieliczka Salt Mine since I saw it featured on a History Channel documentary four or five years ago. The mine is the oldest continually operated mine in the world and is filled with statues craved from salt. It is only about 14 kilometers from Krakow so Ela and I went to see following touring the city. The mine is the largest tourist attraction in Poland. Why is understandable after taking the tour. The following are my pictures from the tour. I paid the requried 10 zyloty to be able to take pictures, but most people took photos without permission. The guide didn’t stop anybody not authorized from taking photos. [nggallery id=5]

Ela and I drove to Krakow from Lubianka this summer. We took Route 1 basically straight down to Krakow. The traffic wasn’t bad except as we passed through Lodz. My only major complaint about Poland is that they need an efficient highway system that doesn’t stop you at traffic lights in urban centers. It was the first time both of us had been to Krakow. It is a lovely city and would recommend that anyone going to Poland spend a day there. The 10 acre main square, Rynek Glowny, is extremely impressive and is the largest of all Europe’s medieval cities. We had dinner at an Italian restaurant in the south end of the square. Dinner was very good, but a bit pricey. We stayed at the Hotel Europejski just outside the old town (Stare Miasto) and next to the train station for one night. We were able to get a superior room for the price of a standard room since we arrived late and didn’t have a reservation. That was a nice perk to the trip. The included breakfast was very good and offered scrambled eggs in addition to the standard European breakfast fare. The following day we spent touring the Rynek Glowny. [...]

Ela and I went into Torun on August 31, 2009 to walk around and see the sights. Not much has changed from last summer. It is remarkable how Torun has been transformed over the 15 years that I have been visiting it. When I first visited the city it still had the communist drabness to it. Now it is vibrant as any western European city. It is referred to as the Krakow of the North of Poland. We noticed many tourists walking around too from all over the world. I particularly like the outdoor cafes that have sprung up all around the old city in the last couple years. Life is good with a little Polish food and beer. We had lunch outside at one of the cafes behind the Town Hall. The old city of Torun is one of the prettiest places that I have ever been to. Photos from the trip are below: [nggallery id=2]
